The modern centre and the remains of the old city are both on the hilly west bank of the Dnipro, third largest river in Europe. Highlights:

Independence Square
The Central Square - The Independence Square with the monument to independent Ukraine 62m high called "Glory to Ukraine". Parades, concerts, festivals and other city arrangements and holidays take place on this square. It contains six fountains, Independence Column and artificial waterfall.


St. Michael Cathedral
St. Michael Golden Domed Cathedral was founded in 1108 by prince Svyatopolk - Yaroslav's grandson. It is the model of the Old Rus architecture.


St. Andrew's church
St. Andrew's church, the monument of the 18th century (1746-61). It is an inspired Baroque interpretation of the traditional Ukrainian five-domed, cross-shaped church by Rastrelli. Its richly decorated nterior features a three-tiered iconostasis and several paintings from the 18th century. The slender curves of its blue, white, gold and green exterior stand out against the skyline.


St. Sophia Cathedral
St. Sophia Cathedral with its magnificent frescoes and murals that present great historic and artistic value. It is the city's oldest standing church built in 1037 in honor of Prince Yaroslav's victory over a rival tribe Pechenegs. Grand prince of Kyiv Yaroslav the Wise intended to enlarge and beatify the city and he started with the construction of the cathedral which became not only a holy place but also a very important state's political, cultural and administrative centre. All ambassadorial receptions, crowning of princes, signing of treaties were held here. The first school and library were also set up in St. Sophia Cathedral.


Kiev Pechersk Lavra Monastery
Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery was founded as the first Ortodox Monastery in Kyiv Rus in 1051. It has become the largest religious establishment in the country. It bears the name of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra binding its foundation in the catacombs and since the 12th century it bears the name of Lavra. Spread across wooded slopes above the Dnipro, it is a unique array of gold-domed churches, underground labyrinths lined with holy relics. In 1926 the Upper Groundswere declared the National Museum, one of which has a hoard of Scythian gold.
